Lviv questions

How do remote workers get around Lviv?

Once you get here, youโ€™ll certainly want to get acquainted with some of the ways remote workers get around Lviv. After all, there is a lot to do around town every day, and youโ€™ll definitely want to know how to get around, so you can get the most out of your time in the city. Unlike Kyiv, Lviv does not have a Metro system meaning transportation methods around the city are above ground. In general, you can expect stations and stops to be easily found and the main tram and bus lines are easy to follow.

Of course, you should also expect all signage to be in Ukraine and, as such, it is recommended that you get somewhat acquainted with local words if you plan on using the system here.

Below, we highlight some of the main ways remote workers get around Lviv.

How to ride

Remote workers can get around Lviv easily and affordably. You can buy your tram or bus ticket directly from the drivers on board using cash or at the many kiosks which can be easily found around the city. If you get a local SIM card (and you should!), it is also possible to buy your ticket using your phone credit by texting 887 - you can find a full list of the commands here https://www.lifecell.ua/en/mobile/useful-services/sms-ticket/.

Trams

The cityโ€™s tram service is certainly the most convenient way for remote workers to get around Lviv. The city has an extensive network that reaches all the main points of interest across the city, regularly connecting with suburban and local bus services at different hubs such as the main Railway Station, Ruska and Mytna Square. Lvivโ€™s tram network has 10 lines, operating on recently-refurbished tracks and using mostly modern trains, although you can still find a couple of historic tramcars operating some popular tourist routes.

Buses

This is another popular way for remote workers to get around Lviv - the cityโ€™s buses can be found all across the city and are an affordable and easy way to get from one place to another here. Lvivโ€™s buses operate fixed routes across all parts of the city, and you can ride by hailing one at a designated bus stop, and disembark by letting the driver know you wish to get off at the nearest stop. The cityโ€™s bus system is easy to use and popular among foreigners in Lviv, although having at least some acquaintance with the local language will help. Beware that popular routes can get very crowded during peak hours.

Marshrutka

This is another popular way to get around Lviv. Marshrutky are similar to buses, except they are a little smaller (usually minivan types) and operate fixed routes without designated stops, making them more of a shared-taxi service. This system is often faster and more convenient in some areas than buses and the tram, although they can also get crowded. During winter storms, all forms of overground travel are heavily affected here.

Other ways to get around

All remote workers looking to get the most out of the time in Lviv should know that the city is very walkable and safe, meaning you often will be better off getting from one place to another on foot. Furthermore, walking around is probably the best way to get your bearing here, while also appreciating some of the striking architecture on show. Taxis are also ubiquitous, and Uber is easily accessible.
