What are the best neighborhoods for remote workers in Budapest?

One of Europe’s most charismatic and beautiful cities, Hungary’s capital is a diverse city meaning you will find some amazing neighborhoods for remote workers in Budapest. With incredible medieval, Roman, classical and even some eastern architecture, Budapest is a city filled with charm and history. The city’s fantastic infrastructure means visitors should feel welcome here and remote workers can count on a stable and comfortable lifestyle. Budapest’s many districts are distinct, however, and you will certainly want to have an idea of which neighborhood fits best with your lifestyle and budget. Below we highlight some of our favorite areas in the city.

Castle District

Budapest’s District I, or the Castle District, is certainly one of the best neighborhoods for remote workers in Budapest looking to be in the heart of the city and close to its major attractions. The Castle District is home to Budapest’s imposing architectural gems, including the Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion and the world-famous Széchenyi Chain Bridge. In this area you will feel surrounded by the cities’ royal and glamorous past, as well as high-end bars and restaurants to match. From here, you’ll have incredible views of the Danube and into Pest, as well as great local services. Indeed, this famous part of the city is heavily touristic and you should still expect to walk across the river into Pest for the city’s main social attractions and best cafes. The Castle District is expensive to live in due to its popularity among tourists, but you can certainly find good accommodation deals away from the main attractions.

Terezvaros

Terezvaros is one of the best neighborhoods for remote workers in Budapest due to its location in the heart of Pest and around the popular Andrassy Avenue. Along Andrassy you will not only find incredible architecture, but also great spots to shop, eat, drink and work. An emerging theater scene, vibrant nightlife and provocative street art make Terezvaros a neighborhood with a distinct and exciting character, hugely attractive among the city’s young and hip crowds during the evenings. Terezvaros also has fantastic museums and is very well-connected to the rest of the city via foot and tram.

Lipotvaros

Together with Belvaros, Lipotvaros forms the economic center of Budapest. In this neighborhood, located on the eastern bank of the Danube in Best, you will find the emblematic Hungarian Parliament and enough neo-Gothic and art nouveau architecture to make you feel like you are in a fairy tale! Stephen’s Basilica and the emblematic Széchenyi Chain Bridge give this part of town a distinctly historical feel, but the emerging high-end nightlife and fine dining options continue to give Lipotvaros a vibrant vibe. As the city’s main business and tourism district, expect prices to be high but also to have the best access to supermarkets and shops within this popular part of the city. As expected, Lipotvaros is extremely well-connected to the rest of the city via foot and tram.

Belvaros

Balvaros’ undeniably sublime style and architecture certainly make it one of the best neighborhoods for remote workers in Budapest looking to live in luxury. This neighborhood not only contains many more cultural and historical attractions but is also home to the city’s most exclusive boutiques and high-end fashion stores. The neoclassical architecture of Belvaros adds to its grandeur, which is only accentuated by the incredible views of the Danube from any of the neighborhood’s exquisite cafes and restaurants. Indeed, Belvaros will be expensive in terms of rents but this part of town is extremely well-connected to the rest of the city and offers easy access by foot to other areas.

Josefvaros and the Palace District

This is one of areas of Budapest with the most character. Indeed, Josefvaros is a quickly-gentrifying area which feels authentic and edgy at times, but the Palace District just a few blocks away houses some of Hungary’s most important art and historical collections in elegant palaces. Rákóczi Square, in Josefvaros, has become a hub for the city’s young and hip crowds who regularly visit the quirky shops, avant-garde cafes and independent galleries around the area. To the south of Josefvaros, you’ll find the Palace District housing the Baroque Wenckheim Palace and famous feminist libraries. Indeed, this area’s diversity and cultural value makes it one of the very best neighborhoods for remote workers in Budapest.
