Of course, you should keep in mind that if you are an EU/EEC Citizen, you do not require a visa to visit, work or study in Germany. Additionally, citizens of 62 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australian can visit Germany and the Schengen area for up to 90 days without a visa. The Schengen Area visa exemption program will be the most popular way for remote workers to enter Germany, but those holding nationalities not in the program will need to apply for a Schengen Visa. This visa requires proof of accommodation, flights, residence in home country and sufficient funds. The visa has a cost of 80EUR and can be processed at any German consulate around the world.
This will be an attractive visa for remote workers in Germany looking to learn the local language while they are in the country. This visa permits stay in the country for up to 1 year and requires holders to attend an accredited institution for German language classes at least 18 hours per week. Applicants to this visa must demonstrate access to at least around 11000EUR per year, registration in a language course in Germany and valid health insurance coverage for the duration of stay. This visa cannot be extended and does not allow employment or further study at any German university.
This type of visa will be of interest to remote workers looking to conduct meetings, sign contracts or engage in official business while in Germany. The visa is essentially the same as the Schengen permit but is required by visa-exempt nationals looking to visit the region specifically for business. Nationals in need of a German Schengen Business Visa must present proof of finances, business references, invitation letters from German companies and proof of employment. This visa allows holders to engage in business across Germany and all other Schengen member states.
The freiberufler permit will be the perfect option in terms of visas for remote workers in Germany. You should note, however, that only those working within the listed professions by German tax law may qualify as freelancers - those self-employed in health, tax and law consultancy; language and information services; and scientific research. Those applying must do so from within Germany and prove access to German clients, health insurance, residence in Germany, and sufficient funds. Those unable to apply from within Germany, should apply from their local consulate abroad.
